About Melur Malaysian Restaurant & Bar

Melur, a new Malaysian restaurant will open on the site of what has been Mawar, a Malaysian restaurant for over 30 years. On this bustling and easy to access Edgware Road in W2, Sam Wong and her husband Sébastien Gimenez will welcome you to a dining experience in a cosy modern Malaysian atmosphere.
Sam has spent most of her life in England, first pupillage with King Bench Walk and being called to the Bar in Middle Temple. She then took on another profession, that of a Solicitor. As a Solicitor Advocate she has been practising in the Paddington, Marylebone, Bayswater area for some time. The former Mawar location has given her an opportunity to pursue another profession… that of a restaurateur. She and her husband are passionate about Malaysian food. Sam was brought up in Kuala Lumpur in a family where food and eating was an obsession. Her mother’s home-cooked curry chicken, ikan bilis, nasi lemak and rendang are known to be divine. She has grown up surrounded by good food and the topic of food and eating all the time. Her mother still sends her the home-cooked sambal ikan bilis from Kuala Lumpur whenever someone is visiting London. Sébastien being French enjoys and knows good food… and is now a passionate and adventurous dinner, a real Malaysian foodie, enjoying not only Sam’s mother’s home cooking but all the stall food, the variety of restaurant in Malaysia. Geraldine, their designer calls them the hip hop and rap couple! For a non practicing barrister and practicing solicitor that is pretty cool.
London does not lack in good Malaysian restaurants. Sam and Seb are supporters and frequent visitors to many of them. And they pay tribute to all the Malaysian dining experience they have had in
Satay House, Awana and many more that have inspired them.
Opening Melur has meant that both Sam and Seb can now share their love of Malaysian food, their family recipes with many of their friends and Malaysian and many others who like to try Asian food, the traditional home-cooked Malaysian dishes, and all who have been to Malaysia and miss the street stall food. They hope lots more adventurous diners will discover and explore the varied cuisine of Malaysia… the tasty and spicy dishes of Malays, Chinese, Nonya, Indian, Straits of Malacca, and its Indonesian neighbours into what is Malaysian cuisine.
Melur is the Malay word for Jasmine, a lovely, delicate and fragrant flower. They hope you will find that the food served in Melur is delicate and fragrant as its name.
Sam and Seb acknowledge the role and work that Geraldine Wong and her team at Chilworth Communications in London has done. Chilworth Communications created and designed the Melur’s brand identity... from the logo, the signage to the website. Working with a young architect and her team Geraldine has designed many aspects of the restaurant. Sam Wong goes on to say “It would not have been possible without Geraldine Wong of Chilworth Communications for designing the Melur interior”. Geraldine, a Malaysian who has lived in England for many years shares Sam and Seb’s passion for good food and Malaysian food in particular. Equally she pays tribute to Sam for being such a good listener, for all the fun and enjoyment and giving her a free hand in the design. While they have good food and eating in common they are so different. Geraldine sees everything in shapes, lines, dimension, proportions and colours and Sam sees everything in technical and legal issues. Together they have been the cool team… effective in dealing with the Planners, Health and Safety authorities, builders, suppliers etc.
Sam and her family have taken great care in selecting the head chef, the sous-chef and the team. The experienced chefs have been cooking not only Malaysian dishes but the exotic food of Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Japan in many of South East Asia’s renowned restaurants to exclusive cruise ships to serving Royalty. Sam has managed to bring them to Melur Restaurant in London.
